    Integumentary System: Functions

Okay, now we’re gonna discuss the functions of the integumentary system. And most people think of it as fairly straightforward, in terms of protection. Protection is one of the key functions of the integumentary system, however, it certainly is not the only function. And we’ll go into quite a bit more detail in terms of the others, but we’re going to start with protection first, because it is truly one of the most important functions. Now, first and foremost, I want to start our discussion talking about the proteins that are associated with the integumentary system, particularly, with the most superficial layer, the epidermis. Now, in terms of the epidermis,…

Integumentary System: Layers of Skin & Functions – Dermis

Okay, let’s continue our discussion of the integumentary system with the deepest layer of the skin. So remember the epidermis is going to be superficial and right underneath it will be the dermis, which is quite a bit more substantial, both in terms of size as well as contents. Okay, so the dermis is situated between the more superficial epidermis and the deeper subcutaneous or hypodermal region. And it’s mentioned before there are lots of stuff in there. So you’ll have hair roots, you’ll have muscles associated with hair, you’ll have sensory receptors, you’ll have glands and very importantly, particularly in terms of the survival of the epidermis, you’re going…

Dissection Basics | Removing Superficial Layers

Hi I’m Cristina Prall. In this video I’ll show you some basic skinning techniques that will be helpful in lab. The goal of skinning is to remove the superficial most layer of skin in order to see what lies deep to it. One of the most intimidating aspects of dissecting for beginners can be estimating just how deep to make that first incision. Although the cutaneous and subcutaneous layers of tissue will be removed throughout the dissection- important structures such as cutaneous nerves and superficial veins do exist within these layers. So if you are trying to maintain any superficial layers you will want to only remove the skin. So…

PFAS in Parchment, MI Water Supply – State of Emergency

This past year, GenX, per and polyfloural alkyl substances and other contaminants that fall into the broader category of perfluorinated compounds have received major media coverage. The most recent event occurred this past weekend in Parchment, Michigan when concentrations of PFAS were detected as high as 1587 parts per trillion. For a bit of perspective this is almost 23 times higher than the lifetime health advisory level set by the EPA and 79 times higher than the minimum risk level set by the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry. Sunday, July 29th the governor’s office announced a state of emergency for residents in the City of Parchment and Cooper…

Parchment School District Video – I am a Panther! I am proud to be a Panther! I am….Parchment!

Parchment is a school of choice district. That means any students that are in Kalamazoo County can enroll in Parchment Schools. Parchment has a reputation of having a good school system and I had two children and I wanted them to get a good education. I figured Parchment was a place for them to get it. I’ve had children in Parchment Schools. I have had grandchildren in the Parchment Schools. and now I have great grandchildren in the Parchment Schools. I think the the people in Parchment are very approachable and people really do take the opportunity to get to know each other and it’s a comfortable place to be.…
